The Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition has given coffee drinkers and beverage manufactures cause for excitement.
The non-profit academic and science organization reveals in a new, triple-blind study that caffeine helps burn body fat when coupled with afternoon exercise.
Compared to subjects who exercised in the morning after being given either caffeine or a placebo, the afternoon group that was given caffeine burned fat at a rate of 29 percent higher. The stimulant was dissolved into water throughout the study in an effort to keep participants unaware whether they were given the placebo.
In addition, the study was limited to only 15 “active” men in their 30s. But the results are likely to spur beverage makers into adding caffeine (or more of it) into their products while touting the benefits.
Both Pepsi and Coca-Cola have already debuted coffee-spiked sodas. And flavored waters by Hint and Perrier are soon hitting the market. Look also for caffeinated, fruit-infused sparkling waters by Ocean Spray in the coming months.
