Beware of the Frosting on this Donut

If you possess both a nagging sweet tooth and a persistent hankering for spicy foods, Dunkin has come to your rescue with its new ghost pepper donut.

The yeasty ring debuted this week as a Halloween special, which a company rep said will stick around for the next 2-3 weeks. It features strawberry icing spiked with the fierce ghost peppers, plus generous sprinklings of fine, red sugar to give them an innocent ruby sparkle. They cost $1.39 each.

Here’s what to expect.

The sweetness of the donut registers immediately upon first bite. And it lingers for a deceiving five seconds. Then the capsaicin from the invisible chilies says “hello” to your uvula. From there, the burn slowly increases as it creeps to the front of your mouth. Within a minute, your entire palate is ablaze with tolerable heat. Though spicy, we didn’t quite break into a sweat.

We got into the Halloween spirit much better eating Dunkin’s double chocolate donut. It’s accented with squiggly lines of orange icing. If neatly stacked, they’d qualify as a decent birthday cake in terms of taste and texture.
