Easy Peasy Latkes for Hanukkah

Product: Trader Joe’s Traditional Latkes

Description: Eight frozen latkes made from shredded potatoes, onions, matzoh meal, eggs, salt, and white pepper.

The product is carried year-round at all Trader Joe’s outlets, although sales spike significantly during Hanukkah, which this year runs from Dec. 10 through 18.

Preparation summary: Cook from frozen in a frying pan over medium heat in a little bit of oil for 4 to 6 minutes on each side. Or bake on a cookie sheet in a preheated 400-degree oven for 8 to 10 minutes on each side.

High points: Sticking to the traditional Hebrew way of making latkes equates to pure satisfaction, as you’ll find with this recipe, which uses matzoh meal instead of flour while skipping over designer ingredients such as zucchini, carrots, cheese, etc. Also, the obligatory onions thankfully aren’t omitted, however subtle.

We preferred the classic stove-top method, in which we fried them gently in a small amount of vegetable oil until they sported a delicate crisp. Latkes are best served with sour cream and applesauce, although we cheated with the latter by using apple butter instead.

Low points: None

Average retail price: $2.69

  1. This looks and sounds like something I would definitely try as long as there are no hidden undesirable ingredients.

  2. These are a tradition at German Christmas markets… made fresh and served with applesauce. They’re called Reibekuchen and are a must!!!! Next year again hopefully as corona cancelled out the markets this year.
