Product: Trader Joe’s ‘Hashbrowns’
Specs: Shredded potatoes preformed into 10 oval-shaped patties. They are bound by soybean and/or canola oil and dextrose. Each patty contains 250 milligrams of sodium and 120 calories.
Preparation summary: Bake at 400 degrees on an un-greased cookie sheet for 14 minutes. Flip the patties halfway through the cooking process.
High points: These take the legwork out of making hash browns from scratch. No shredding, frying or cleanup required. The exterior of the patties develop a pleasant outer crispiness if baked for an extra minute or two. Inside, they’re fluffy and moist.
Low points: Though not as salty and oil-drenched as their counterpart at McDonald’s, we would still welcome a further reduction of those ingredients.
Average retail price: $2.29
Availability: Trader Joe’s frozen-food aisle
We’ve been eating them for years! Here’s a faster tip that still gives a crisp exterior and moist interior. Nuke in the microwave for 30 seconds and then throw them in a fry pan no oil or butter needed. Flip once. Enjoy.
