Since news broke last week that Popeye’s began debuting chocolate-filled beignets, albeit only at locations around the Boston and Baltimore areas for starters, reporting on the dessert launch resembles what you’d expect if Julia Child rose from the dead.
We became overexcited too at the prospect that these puffy French-style donuts dusted in powdered sugar are slated to descend upon a Popeye’s near us and you.
But it’s best to put your fantasies to rest, at least for the time being, unless you live near Popeye’s on Martin Luther King Parkway in Boston, and Sinclair Lane in Baltimore. (The latter will start carrying the beignets within two weeks.)
Inquiries we made to 24 other Popeye’s outlets all over the country were met with bewilderment. We spoke mainly to supervisors—in Los Angeles, San Diego, Houston, Chicago, Atlanta, and New Orleans, where Popeye’s is based. Many weren’t familiar with the roll out, which will reportedly become national in the coming month. Some had never even heard of beignets.
The company doesn’t list a phone number for consumer, media or franchisee inquiries—only an email link. Ours weren’t answered, despite effusing how we love to death Popeye’s spicy chicken sandwich that was introduced last year.

Dang. I don’t live near those locations. I guess I’ll have another spicy chicken sandwich to console myself.
