The Hash Star

Sink into a Blaze of Sleep

PepsiCo describes it as “an enhanced water beverage” to perhaps combat stress and promote relaxation. And insomniacs can’t wait for its mass-market release.

Known as Driftwell, the non-carbonated drink is set to hit store shelves in early 2021, although a company rep who requested anonymity told The Hash Star parts of the West and Midwest could see its arrival as early as mid-December.

Driftwell contains 200 milligrams of L-theanine, an amino acid touted for its sedating effects. The acid is found in mushrooms and green and black teas.

Available widely in pill form as a supplement in 100 or 200-milligram doses, users claim L-theanine also enhances cognitive function while acting as a mood stabilizer. Pepisco claims it has clinical data proving the amino acid is safe and effective.

As for the flavor of Driftwell, don’t expect the familiar taste of Pepsi soda. The canned product will be available only in blackberry-lavender—with no fizz and supposedly no calories.
