We somehow missed the frenzy for “cereal straws” when they landed into the eager little hands of kids more than 10 years ago. But we’re on board with their return, thanks to the exhilaration expressed online by 20-somethings who fondly remember the sugary snack from their childhoods.
For unknown reasons, Kellogg’s abruptly discontinued the cereal straws in 2009. An international uproar ensued, followed by an online petition started on Change.org pleading for their return. That effort ultimately garnered more than 81,600 signatures.
“With the alternative straw craze, there’s never been a better time to make edible straws,” wrote Sam Stead on the petition’s comment thread.
Another comment, dating further back by a blunt Ben Dearing reads: “Them shits delicious.”
The straws will be available nationally by fall. Their exteriors come in two varieties: Fruit Loops and Cocoa Krispies. Inside are smooth, edible coatings built to withstand milk and other liquids until users ravish the tubes with their teeth.
They’ll be sold in packs of five, 18 and 24 at prices ranging from $1.50 to $6.
Oh yes! I will anxiously be awaiting the fruit loop straws!😃😃
