The Hash Star

Thumbs Up to a Florida Confection

Product: Edwards Key Lime Pie

Description: Two single-serve slices of key lime pie, each nestled in their own triangular-shaped boxes. The slices are sold frozen and take about 45 minutes to thaw in the refrigerator (about 15 minutes at room temperature). They are free of high fructose corn syrup, artificial colors and preservatives, although hydrogenated palm-kernel oil shows up on the ingredient list.

Preparation summary: Thaw or eat frozen.

High points: So what if summer has come to a screeching halt. Mellow-tasting Key lime juice in the curd tells you this descends from the original Key West recipe. The pie wakes up the palate without sending your lips into a goofy pucker. And with its semi-sweet graham cracker crust playing up to a velvety texture and airy rosettes of whipped cream, you’re easily transported to a tropical sunset at the foot of Duval Street.

Low points: For ecological and health reasons, the manufacturer should get rid of the palm oil.

Average Retail Price: $3.99

Availability: Most major grocery stores, Target and Walmart.
