Product: Nantucket Style Cranberry Pie
Description: An upside-down pie by Trader Joe’s sporting a layer of cranberries and coarsely chopped walnuts, both complemented by a biscuit-like crust. The pie measures about 7 inches in diameter and will stick around only until Christmas.
Preparation summary: Defrost either in a 325-degree oven for 20 minutes or at room temperature for two hours. Then turn upside down onto a serving plate.
High points: Whether you want to impress the pants off your holiday dinner guests or bliss out privately over lawless portions of this semi-tart pie, you’ll need to act fast before it disappears into the winter sunset.
The pie is a New England classic dating back at least a century. In this boxed form, it gives the impression that a skilled pastry chef applied each cranberry in meticulous order. The sweet factor is decently controlled; the walnuts add luxurious texture; and the crust reveals comforting hints of butter and almond extract. This could possibly be the best frozen dessert to pass through our freezer.
