Sandwich-Infused Potato Chips?

Product: Pastrami on Rye Flavored Potato Chips

Specs: Part of a limited-edition snack from 365 Whole Foods Market featuring thin-style potato chips flavored after three popular sandwiches: Pastrami on Rye (reviewed here); Italian Hoagie; and Cuban Press. The chips are sold in 10-ounce bags and are expected to remain available at least until the end of summer.

Preparation summary: Ready to eat

High points: “What the hell?” blurted one of our leading taste testers in moderate amazement after shoving the first chip into his mouth. Sure enough, the flavors of pastrami, rye bread, and faint hints of pickle and deli mustard became apparent.

To our pleasant surprise, the product doesn’t rely on scads of salt to achieve the sandwich’s essence. The ingredient lineup instead reveals caraway, coriander, garlic powder, mustard seed, and other spices that potentially show up in the curing of pastrami. Note to vegans and vegetarians: Beef stock is also used.

Low points: The seasonings behave a little aggressively. And if you’re craving an actual pastrami on rye, the chips are a taunting no-protein snack that will only increase your hankering for the real deal.
