Stand Up and Shout

Product: Old El Paso Stand ‘n Stuff Taco Shells

Description: Box of 10 crispy taco shells that stand upright because of their flat bottoms. The shells are made with corn flour that is pre-soaked in lime water, plus palm oil and salt. They are “produced with genetic engineering,” as stated beneath the ingredients list.

The product is also available in Ranch flavor, and in a white-corn version flavored with “a hint of lime.”

Preparation summary: We prefer oven over microwave because the former yields a nicer crisp. Place the shells on a cookie sheet and bake at 325 degrees for 6 to 7 minutes, or microwave on high for 45 seconds.

High points: Unlike standard, crispy tacos that lay subserviently on their sides from start to finish, these stand confidently on your plate—sometimes right up until the last few bites. Loading them with various fillings is easier, too, because they sport wider crevasses compared to shells with curvy bottoms.

Low points: We call on Old El Paso to use organic corn instead of the genetically modified crap. It would make a huge difference in terms of flavor and wholesomeness. And get rid of the environmentally offensive palm oil too.

Average retail price: $2.19 (about $1 extra for the flavored shells)

Availability: Major grocery stores
